Immigration is a key issue in the upcoming November 5th, 2024 vote. Polls indicate a significant shift in American public opinion has occurred, with most registered voters supporting measures that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.
While Americans remain opposed to the construction of a border wall or the revocation of birthright citizenship, many now back a mass deportation plan aimed at removing over 11 million undocumented immigrants from the United States.
Former President Trump has pledged to carry out the "largest domestic deportation operation in American history," mobilizing large-scale raids and establishing new detention facilities to detain individuals awaiting deportation forcibly. In fact, recent surveys reveal that between 51 and 62 percent of Americans are now in favor of deportations, with some Latino and Hispanic voters also voicing support.
For the first time in modern history, such a vast deportation effort is no longer an outlying opinion but a mainstream stance in American politics.
However, public sentiment on immigration is far from cohesive and indeed, views are contradictory. A Pew Research Center survey from earlier this year found that while many Americans favor stronger enforcement, 59 percent of respondents—including a notable portion of Trump supporters—also support allowing undocumented immigrants to remain in the U.S. legally.
