Some Background:

Affectionately dubbed the ‘Bard of Stratford’, Zephaniah’s connection to Newham began in the late 70’s and early 80’s when he moved to the borough at the age of twenty-two and immersed himself in various community and social justice initiatives, including housing and food co-operatives. He was a Patron of the Newham Monitoring Project, Discover Children’s Story Centre, and Hibiscus Caribbean Elderly Association, and regularly taught at the Newham Black Performing and Visual Arts Workshop.

This special tribute event will feature readings of Zephaniah’s poems by renowned figures such as poet and children’s author Michael Rosen, and other influential artists, writers, musicians, such as Levi Tafari, The Riddim Squad and Zita Holbourne, as well as public figures, who will share their reflections on his influence.

There will also be an exhibition celebrating Zephaniah’s role as a pioneer in Black British culture and his contributions to human rights advocacy, alongside a range of stalls from community organisations and enterprises.
