Inquest opens into Mikey Powell death
A Birmingham man with a history of mental illness died in police custody after being struck by a patrol car called to his home, an inquest jury has been told.

The inquest into the controversial death in police custody of Michael Lloyd Powell (known as Mikey) opens on Wednesday 4 November 2009, and is expected to last for six weeks. Mikey was a cousin of the renowned poet and writer, Benjamin Zephaniah, a patron of INQUEST.

Powell family win important milestone battle
Last Friday, 2 July, the family of Mikey Powell came a step closer to finding out exactly how Mikey died. The High Court in London ordered that Northants police allow them access to 4000 documents relating to the police investigation into Mikey’s death.
Delay hits inquest over arrested dad death
An inquest into the death of a Birmingham father who died after being arrested by police has been delayed again. The hearing is now expected to take place in November, when more than six years will have passed since the death of 38-year-old Michael Powell.
