Police forces have a statutory duty to refer all incidents involving a death or serious injury to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Each year, they publish data showing how many people have died after contact with the police.

The report provides a definitive set of figures for England and Wales. It also gives an overview of the nature and circumstances in which the deaths have happened.” Download the report here. Additionally, in September/October 2020 the IOPC Director General and their Board have jointly agreed and released their Strategic plan for 2018-2022.
