Darcus Howe, the broadcaster, writer and civil rights campaigner, has died aged 74. His family announced his death in a statement released on Sunday that read: “Darcus died quietly and unexpectedly in his sleep on the evening of Saturday 1 April. Our private grief is inseparable from our public pride.”
Howe, originally from Trinidad and Tobago, lived in Brixton, south London, for 30 years and was well known for his Channel 4 series Black on Black and late-night current affairs programme The Devil’s Advocate.

Shahid Aziz, 30, was on remand at Armley prison when he was killed by his cell mate Peter McCann in April 2004.
McCann was believed to be “low-risk” for cell-sharing despite a history of violence and knives, an inquest later heard. McCann, 28, slashed Mr Aziz’ throat with a makeshift knife, Leeds Coroner’s Court has heard.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, on 8th September 1930, David Oluwale is the first of 1000′s of Black people to die in police custody in Britain. April 16, 1969, is the last time David is seen alive. He is in the company of Ellerker and Kitching.
They find him asleep in the doorway of the Bridal House shop at about 3 a.m. Ellerker and Kitching attack him with their truncheon. Later, David is found dead in the River Aire.

Gareth Myatt of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was 15 years old when he died days after starting a sentence at Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre in Northants.
He was being restrained by staff when he lost consciousness, Gareth was one of the youngest people to die in the British prison system, and sparked further fury and debate about methods of restraint used in Young Offender Institutions (YOI’s).

Andrew Pimlott died after suffering horrific burns in an incident when he was "Tasered" by a police officer while doused in a flammable liquid.
Police were called to his home in Plymouth following a domestic disturbance and told that he was in the garden and had a can of flammable liquid with him.

24-year-old Wesley McGoldrick, originally from Ruislip, Greater London, had been in prison for less than a day when he was found hanging from his cell room window on 19th April 2005. He had used bed sheets to hang himself from the bars.
Wesley was caught shoplifting cheese and milk from a London branch of Sainsbury’s on Saturday 16th April 2005.

The release of Hurricane Carter, who was serving a life sentence for three murders he did not commit, bought support from Bob Dylan, Muhammad Ali and other members of the radical chic in the 1970s.
However, it took the devotion of a teenager from a Brooklyn ghetto and his “adopted” Canadian family to finally bring about Carter’s freedom in the 1980s.

The inquest into the self-inflicted death of Emily Hartley has concluded with the jury finding a lack of professionalism at HMP New Hall, including in the implementation of suicide and self-harm procedures (ACCT*), contributed to the 21 year old’s death on 23 April 2016.
She was the youngest of 22 women to die in women’s prisons in 2016.

Blair Peach was killed on 23rd April 1979 by members of the Metropolitan Police’s Special Patrol Group while he was attending an anti-Nazi demonstration in Southall in West London.
During the protest, against the National Front, Blair was knocked unconscious and killed by the police. In April 1979, the events of the general election were overshadowed by fighting between the police and the largely-Asian population of Southall.

Lee Donovan was arrested in Newport, South Wales, at around 10pm on Friday 25 April 2008. He was taken to a police cell in nearby Pontypool at 10.45pm. By 1am the next morning he was dead.
Lee’s family want to know how a happy and healthy 23 year old went out with friends on a Friday night and ended up dead in police custody just hours later.

A Texas police officer turned himself in after he was charged with murder in the shooting death of a 15-year-old. Roy Durwood Oliver, a patrol officer in the Dallas suburb of Balch Springs since July 2011, was released on $300,000 bail.
While dispatched on complaints about drunk teenagers at a party last weekend, Oliver fired his rifle at a car full of teenagers who were leaving, according to investigators, killing Jordan Edwards.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an investigation following the death of an expectant Father, 24-year-old Azelle Rodney, who was shot dead in the back seat of a car by a police officer in Edgware on Saturday 30th April 2005.
The 2012 Inquiry brief was ‘To ascertain by inquiring how, where and in what circumstances Azelle Rodney came by his death on 30 April 2005 and then to make any such recommendations as may seem appropriate.’
