People who donated cash towards a memorial bench for a Whitstable-born peace campaigner, Brian Haw, [were] invited to an afternoon of music and celebration of his life. On Sunday 1st June members of Brian Haw’s family, including four of his children and a granddaughter, took part in the official opening on Whitstable beach.

Maya Angelou, the American poet and author, died at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Wednesday. She was 86. Her son, Guy B Johnson, confirmed the news in a statement. He said: “Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension.

US former boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, whose wrongful conviction for murder caused an international outcry, has died at the age of 76. He died on Sunday at his home in Toronto, Canada, his friend and former co-defendant John Artis, confirmed.

All out for Mumia Abu-Jamal’s 60th birthday

On April 24, political prisoner and world-renowned journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal turns 60. He has spent over half his life in solitary confinement on Pennsylvania’s death row, and most recently, since early 2012, he has been in general population at SCI Mahanoy where he still faces life in prison despite ample evidence of his innocence.
