Jury: “Police restraint killed Mikey Powell”
The jury at the inquest into the controversial death in police custody in 2003 of Michael Lloyd Powell (known as Mikey) today returned a damning narrative verdict and found that the way that he was restrained resulted in his death from positional asphyxia (see below).
Retired officer held over Lawrence inquiry
A retired police constable and a police staff member have been arrested after claims that evidence was hidden in the Stephen Lawrence murder inquiry. The 53-year-old man and retired 62-year-old man were held on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
INQUEST wins the Longford Prize
INQUEST, the organisation which assists the families of those who die in custody, has been awarded the 2009 Longford Prize. The Longford Prize recognises the contribution of an individual, group or organisation working in the area of penal or social reform which has shown ‘outstanding qualities of humanity, courage, persistence and originality’.
