Sandra Bland (Cont’d)

Sandra BlandSince Sandra’s death her family have campaigned for the Sandra Bland Act. This Act will require a higher burden of proof for a police officer to stop and search vehicles.

The act also stipulates that officers will receive training to avoid racial profiling and for those officers who have engaged in racial profiling to undergo mandatory counselling.

It will also prohibit officers arresting people for offences that are punishable by fines.  The Act will also signpost those who have mental health issues or substance abuse into treatment from the county jail making it easier for them to post bail. The Act aims to close a number of loopholes that Sandra fell through.

Her family continue to fight for justice and reform pushing for this act to reach the members of society that need it the most.
