The Burmese military authorities have released the pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, from house arrest. Appearing outside her home in Rangoon, Ms Suu Kyi told thousands of jubilant supporters they had to “work in unison” to achieve their goals.
The Home Secretary should lift the ban on marches in a city or risk making protesters more radical, a think-tank said today. Banning protests from extremist groups was an ineffective way of combating their ideology, Demos said.
On 23 September, 40-year-old Teresa Lewis will become the first woman to be executed in the state of Virginia for almost a century. She’ll also be the first woman put to death in the US since 2005. Considering that, in the intervening five years, around 220 men will have been executed, it puts it into perspective: executing women is unusual.

Paul Coker, 32, died at Plumstead police station, two hours after he was arrested at Lucy Chadwick’s house for breaching the peace on 6 August 2005. Mr Coker had shouted “I can’t breathe, you’re killing me”, during his arrest.
The family of Habib ‘Paps’ Ullah who died whilst being arrested during a routine stop and search in a car park in High Wycombe in July 2008 have recently met with the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) to assess the situation in terms of the investigation.
