Extra protection for 17-year-olds in police custody will be put in place by the end of October, the Home Office has said. Ministers have proposed that parents or guardians must be informed about a 17-year-old’s detention and an “appropriate adult” must be contacted.

A prison complaints body has slammed HMP Birmingham after a terminally-ill convict had to wait until he was ‘screaming in agony’ before being admitted to hospital. Carl Dent, of Woodcross, in Bilston, was riddled with cancer and died on July 5 last year, eight weeks after he was finally taken from the Winson Green prison to New Cross Hospital, in Wolverhampton.

Japan executions show ‘chilling’ escalation in death penalty
The execution of two death row inmates in Japan shows that a “chilling” escalation of death penalty use under the new Liberal Democratic government is intensifying, Amnesty International said. Yoshihide Miyagi, 56, and Katsuji Hamasaki, 64, were hanged in Tokyo today.

Man died in cell due to “intoxication” inquest rules
A young man died in a prison cell at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court after taking cocaine and drinking alcohol an inquest has ruled. Adam Bosson (24) of Goddard Crescent, Wisbech, died in a cell at the court on February 20, 2008, minutes after being checked on by staff.
Joey, 23, found hanged in prison cell
Joey Corcoran, 23, from East Ham, was remanded in June accused of burglary, driving while disqualified, theft and dangerous driving, and was set for trial next month. stayed in a single cell on B Wing, but on September 15 he was found hanged with bed sheets in his cell.
