Relatives of a dad shot dead as armed police raided his Birmingham flat broke down in tears as the footage was played to an inquest jury. Trevor Smith, 52, was killed when a single shot “ricocheted” off his bed as a warrant was executed at his flat in Lee Bank on March 15, 2019.

During the first day of an inquest into his death, Mr Smith’s family was warned they would hear “difficult evidence” over the course of the three-to-four-week hearing.

Senior coroner Louise Hunt explained how officers appearing during the proceedings had been granted anonymity “due to the nature of their work”.

The court heard the West Midlands Police operation was in response to reports of threats made by Mr Smith to his ex-partner, Amy Briggs. It was said that, on January 9, 2019, he sent her a threatening video on WhatsApp, which appeared to show a gun on a cream sofa.

In the video, which was played to the court, a male voice said to be Mr Smith’s was heard saying: “The best thing you can do is go to the old bill and be a grass because you are f*cked”.
