A dozen of the country’s jails now have such chronic staff shortages they are having to draft in officers from other prisons to help maintain order. The staff shortage has forced some jails into locking prisoners in their cells for extended periods.
The trial of former Metropolitan Police sergeant Paul White delivered a not guilty verdict on Tuesday. White had been accused of perjury in relation to evidence he gave at the inquest into the death of Sean Rigg.

While the police killing of eight undertrials who had escaped from Bhopal Central Jail on Tuesday has been surrounded by a fog of claims, counterclaims and feints, the incident continues a long established trend of encounter killings in India.
400 people joined a procession last Saturday to commemorate those who have died in police custody. The march was organised by the United Families & Friends Campaign. Deaths currently stands at 1,578 since 1990, according to charity Inquest.
