A drunk wheelchair-bound man froze to death just metres from his home hours after police let him make his own way home, an inquest heard.

Craig Buckby, 31, was found dead just 200m from his home after he refused to get out a taxi and then told an officer that came to help that he would “keep going around in a circles” until she left.

Mr Buckby, who suffered from muscular dystrophy, had been drinking into the early hours after watching Derby County play Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Just hours before his death, on January 30, he told a bar manager he wanted to “throw himself in the river,” prompting her to call him a cab. She called him a cab to get him home, but he refused to get out and the driver called the police.

But when they arrived, Mr Buckby would not tell them where he lived, the inquest was told. After he was helped out of the vehicle, the call handler told officers he would just circle the block until they left him and so they pulled off at 12.45am.

Tragic Mr Buckby, of Alvaston, Derby, was found dead on Stevenage Close – under 200m from his home on Hatfield Road – by a passer-by at 7.40am.
