The family of Exeter church caretaker Thomas Orchard have spoken of their anguish after the shock collapse of the trial of those accused of his manslaughter.
Trial judge Mr Justice King discharged the jury for legal reasons after four days of deliberations at Bristol Crown Court. The prosecution has called for a retrial. But that may not take place until 2017 – some four years after Mr Orchard, 32, died.
His brother Jack Orchard said: “We are all massively disappointed. We are hoping there will be a retrial, but that might not be until 2017. That’s four and a half years since Tom died. It’s crazy really. To have to go through the whole trial again – words cannot describe it.
“We were aware something was going on behind the scenes at the trial and we are told the judge’s decision is exceptional but that does not make us feel any better”.
