On a day just like this one, in 1989, Britain’s worst football disaster happened at Hillsborough, Sheffield, when 96 fans were crushed to death during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Last year a sombre memorial service was held to mark 25 years since that tragic day, and promises were made of bringing to justice those responsible for the cover-up and the lies.
We aren’t there yet, but we will be soon. Today though, is a day for remembrance.
This afternoon we have a memorial service at Anfield which you can follow live here. We’ll also be carrying tributes and updates all day on the remembrance of one of football’s darkest days.
