Relatives of Birmingham prisoner Adnan Rafiq – who predicted his own death in a chilling letter to jail bosses – have spoken of their grief after an official report found more could have been done to help him.
The 22-year-old was fatally beaten by a fellow inmate at HMP Hewell, near Redditch, in January 2013. Now the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has found that jail staff should have done more to protect him after a previous attack.
In the wake of the report, Jamaal Yasin wrote on Facebook: “Miss you so much I wish I could see you again R.I.P Uncle Adnan.” A second comment on the site’s RIP Adnan page added: “Inshallah justice will be done!!!”
Mr Rafiq, from Moseley, suffered multiple skull fractures when he was punched, kicked and had his head stamped on. He died three days later in hospital.
