On Thursday 5 February 2015 we screened a film by Metal Dog Media giving a unique insight into the history of the Reggae Sound System culture in the United Kingdom.

Guest Speakers: Fran Porter and David Barrett.

From the 1950s Reggae sound systems thrived in Britain as a vital musical hot line to the Caribbean. Sound systems played Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae and Dub across Britain competing in sound clashes to establish who had the best Champion Sound.

With a classic dancehall soundtrack, the film features internationally renowned artists, contributions from musical giants Freddie MacGregor and Pete Waterman, through to the people of Coventry who made it happen.

Champion Sound is a unique insight into the history of the sound system in the UK from the 1950s. Outside of London, Midlands cities had an often unsung but vital role in UK Sound System culture. A lesser told but no less great history of a musical love.

The film screening was followed with a Q&A with directors Fran Porter and David Barrett.

Event hosted by The Drum, Birmingham.
