In this grass-roots documentary we hear why Tottenham burned, show how the flames spread and look at the deep-rooted reasons that have set fires blazing in the last three decades. Four people in this small community, all black and working class, have died at the hands of the police and this film retraces their story.

Powerful witness testimonies are balanced against police reaction to the violence that exploded and the film offers a fresh political analysis of the cause of the uprising. Exploring ideas of collective memory ‘Burn’ is poetry for the people.

This radical film bears witness that only justice for those that have died at the hands of the police can put out the fires.

The film screening will be followed with a Q& A with Tippa Naphtali, Kedisha Burrell-Brown and Ken Fero.

  • Tippa Naphtali is the cousin of 38 year-old Mikey Powell who died in the custody of West Midlands police in September 2003. He is also founder of 4WardEver UK and has been active in the community for over 35 years.
  • Kedisha Burrell-Brown is the sister of 29 year-old Kingsley Burrell who died in hospital days after being arrested by West Midlands police and detained under the Mental Health Act in a secure psychiatric unit, in March 2011.
  • Ken Fero is a multi-award winning radical documentary filmmaker and activist. He is Senior Lecturer in Media Production at Coventry University and Visiting Research Fellow at Goldsmith’s College.

Event to be hosted by The Drum, Birmingham.
