The Independent Commission on Mental Health and Policing is currently carrying out a consultation in the form of an online survey. The Commission was established in September 2012 by the Metropolitan police in response to the inquest verdict into the death of Sean Rigg in police custody.

Deaths in police custody have ‘got to stop’

In September 2003 Mikey Powell, a 38-year-old father of three children, was arrested by the police following a disturbance outside his home west of Birmingham. Following his death in police custody, an inquest jury found that he had died as a result of the way officers had restrained him while in their care.
