Funeral of Kingsley Burrell takes place in Handsworth

The funeral of Birmingham man Kingsley Burrell took place in Birmingham on Friday – 17 months after his death in police custody. 

The service at Hamstead Road Baptist Church, Handsworth, was followed by a march along Soho Road to Handsworth Cemetery. Family and friends of the 29-year-old, from Hockley, are demanding answers from authorities about how he died.

Mr Burrell had dialled 999 on March 27, 2011, claiming to have been threatened by a gang in Icknield Port Road, in Ladywood. Officers who arrived at the scene detained the trainee security guard under the Mental Health Act. Within hours, he was sectioned and taken to a mental health unit in the city.
