Kunst & Soul ‘Voices from Death Row’ was a small event with a big spirit, and everyone who attended was touched by the messages of hope and solidarity that affected all that were present.
Families and campaigners gathered in Leicester to pay tribute to those that had died in custody. The day marked what would have been the forty-fifth birthday of Mikey Powell, who died in September 2003 after being detained by police in Birmingham.
Indymedia Birmingham, in conjunction with the Mikey Powell Campaign, screened Injustice, and a short filmed interview with Ramona Africa of the US based MOVE group.
On the stage in the small upstairs bar of Catch 22, right in the centre of Hoxton, Pat Coker, the mother of Paul Coker, shakes with rage, “We will go on fighting! Until the day we die.”
Familie & friends of the Mikey Powell campaign held a commemorative event on the third anniversary of his death in police custody, and to help promote the new Sounds of Injustice CD.
The event bought together families and artists including renowned poet Benjamin Zephaniah, cousin of Mikey Powell, to help launch a major new campaign, and share their stories.
On 17th June 2012 people gathered at peaceful vigils to remember fathers that have died in police, gevangenis, mental health and immigration detention. These nationally organised peaceful vigils took place simultaneously at a number of other locations across the country.
