Jessica Adam
An inquest jury returned a narrative verdict saying that “Jessica was concerned about a number of matters” and concluded that “she took her own life while the balance of her mind was disturbed but she did not intend to die.”Jessica Adam was the fifth of ten women to die a self-inflicted death at HMP New Hall since the beginning of 2002.

Katherine Woods & Tracy Logan
Two young women hanged themselves in HMP Risley only days into sentences for non-violent offences. Tracy Logan, a 24-year-old drug dependent, took her own life on 24th August 1997, alone in a cell, days into a one-year sentence for theft. She was alone in her cell and hung herself from an upturned bed. Her death mirrored that of Katherine Woods in the same prison, who was also drug dependent, almost one year previously.

Kelly Hutchinson
22-year-old Kelly Hutchinson was found hanging in her cel. She was serving a five month sentence for theft. Her death came just days after a jury at the inquest into another death at HMP New Hall.

Louise Giles
At the conclusion of the inquest into the death of 20 year old Louise Giles at HMP Durham, the jury has returned a highly critical narrative verdict and have condemned Prison Service management.

Rebecca Turner
Rebecca, a mother of two young children, was found hanging in her cell on the Induction Wing at HMP Low Newton on 28 July 2004. She died within two days of arriving at the prison. Rebecca had a history of heroin use but at the time of being sentenced was on a methadone treatment programme.

Ten years ago, a royal commission found that Aborigines were dying in custody at the rate of two a week. Today, the situation is worse. A damning report by Amnesty International found that deaths of Aborigines in prison have reached new record levels. They are dying at almost twice the rate of other prisoners.

David Henderson, 18, was discovered hanging from a sheet tied to his cell window at Brinsford Young Offenders Institution in the West Midlands on 17 March last year. He died five days later in Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital.

Karl Lewis
Karl Lewis, an 18 year-old man, was found hanging in his cell at HM Young Offenders’ Institute Stoke Heath at approximately 1am on the morning of 22 January 2005. The inquest into his death began on Thursday 5 October 2006.

Mohamed Shameen
A prisoner was hospitalised twice in two days after successive beatings by ‘Star Force’ policemen. Mohamed Shameen, aged 22, from Meemu Alif, Reendhoomaage, has been imprisoned at penitentiary block no. 373 in Male’ for over six months.

Anna Baker
Anna was the second of six women to die in a 12 month period at HMP Styal. Anna died on 26th November 2002 after she was found hanging in her cell at approximately 13.50pm.

Annie Kelly
Annie Kelly was found hanging in a strip cell in the Mourne House
punishment block during the afternoon of 7th September 2002. She was hanging by ligatures torn from an anti-suicide blanket from the diamond steel mesh of a window that should have been fully covered by Perspex to render it ligature-free.

Sarah Thomas
Ms Thomas had taken cocaine before she suffered a fit at Stoke Newington police station. She had been arrested by plain clothes police officers for a public order offence in Finsbury Park, London. She was transferred to Homerton Hospital where she died late on Friday night.

Wendy Booth
Wendy Booth was found hanging in her cell in 12 November 2003. She had been placed on suicide watch on numerous occasions since arriving at the troubled prison in February 2002.
Wendy had been described as withdrawn and very down and had not been eating properly.

Amir Cheema
People shower rose petals as the coffin, containing body of Amir Cheema, arriveds from Berlin, Germany for burial in his ancestral town of Saorki, on Saturday 13 May 2006. Amir Cheema, died in custody after he was arrested in Germany.

The family of a man who died after being arrested by police won a £324,000 payout from Scotland Yard yesterday, but no apology. Richard O’Brien, 37, died in April 1994 after being pinned to the ground by three officers who said they were arresting him for being drunk and disorderly.
