Leon BriggsIn November 2013 following the death of 39 year-old Leon Briggs in Luton, the Independent Police Complaints Commission confirmed in a Press Release that they would be treating the police custody death as a criminal investigation. The offences could include negligence or manslaughter, it said.
Surjit Singh ChhokarA police force was been told to reopen the investigation into the murder of an Asian man in 1998. In 2012 the family of Surjit Singh Chhokar met with Scotland's top law officer who confirmed Strathclyde Police have been instructed to carry out further investigations into his murder under double jeopardy legislation.
The Birmingham SixOn 14 March 1991 Six Irishmen that had been imprisoned for nearly 17 years and widely known as Britain's biggest mass murderers, were freed by the Court of Appeal. In light of substantive and fresh evidence, Lord Justice Lloyd announced; “your appeals will be allowed and you are free to go.”
Thomas OrchardThomas Orchard, 32, a caretaker at St Thomas Parish Church, died in police custody on 10 October 2012 in Exeter, Devon. He was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and taken by police van to Heavitree Road Police Station.

Andy Lopez13 year-old Andy Lopez was walking to his friend’s house in Santa Rosa, California in October 2013 when two Sonoma County deputies spotted him carrying what they thought was an AK-47 assault rifle which was in fact a toy airsoft gun. Andy was shot dead.
Eric GarnerOn Thursday 17 July 2014, Eric Garner, a 43-year-old father of six of Staten Island, went into cardiac arrest after officers attempted to take him into custody on charges of selling illegal cigarettes. He was pronounced dead at the hospital approximately one hour later.
Roxana SaberiRoxana Saberi, an Iranian-American journalist, made her first public appearance following her release from prison in May 2009 after more than three months in detention. She said; “I’m of course very happy to be free, and I want to thank all the people all over the world who helped me and my family."
Sara KruzanSara Kruzan was just 17 years-old when she was told she would die in prison for the 1994 shooting of George Gilbert Howard in a Riverside motel room. By January 2013 she had spent almost 19 years in prison for the killing.
The Sharpeville MassacreOn 21 March 1960, 69 black Africans were killed and hundreds more were injured when police opened fire on peaceful protestors in the South African township of Sharpeville, south of Johannesburg. Around 5,000 people had gathered at Sharpeville police station to protest against pass laws.
