An investigation into the death in police custody of Luton man Leon Briggs has been referred to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), a police watchdog has said.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it has concluded its investigation into Mr Briggs’ death and has sent the case to the CPS for a decision on whether criminal charges should be brought against any individual.
Mr Briggs died on November 4, 2013 at Luton Police Station after being detained Bedfordshire Police under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
The IPCC has been investigating a police detention officer and five police officers – two police constables and three sergeants – for their involvement in the restraint of Mr Briggs.
Whilst at the station he was placed in a cell and restrained, and it was during this detention that he became unresponsive and an ambulance was called.
