An investigation has begun after a man died in hospital hours after being arrested by police in Leicester. Officers were called to reports of a disturbance in Devana Road just before 08:30 BST on Wednesday. The 26-year-old man was arrested but then taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary due to concerns for his welfare.
He died at about 12:30 but the cause is not known. Polisi Independen Komisi Pengaduan (IPCC) has started an investigation. The dead man, who was from Leicester, has not yet been named.
The IPCC confirmed the man was arrested under section 136 of the Mental Health Act and police had used incapacitant spray and restraints. Police referred the death to the IPCC immediately.
IPCC commissioner Amerdeep Somal said: “In the circumstances of a man dying in hospital hours after being detained by police it is right that we carry out an independent investigation into what happened.”
