A company which has used “inhumane” policies, and whose staff could still be charged in connection with the death of an asylum seeker two years ago, yesterday won a five-year contract to house and transport asylum seekers in Sheffield.
G4S will receive around £100 million from the UK Border Agency (UKBA) to house and transport asylum seekers across the North East, Yorkshire and Humber region, while their claim is being assessed.
The outsourcing specialists took their place as front-runners for the contract on 9 December last year, whilst still the subject of an inquiry by the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee.
The committee’s report, published in January this year, responded to the death of Jimmy Mubenga, a failed asylum seeker from Angola, while on a plane in the custody of G4S guards.
Three guards who were escorting Mr Mubenga at the time of his death are currently on bail while prosecutors weigh up the evidence against them.
