Detective ‘coached’ murder trial witness

A senior detective investigating the murder of Daniel Morgan “prompted and coached” a key criminal witness with a history of psychiatric problems, it can be revealed this week.

The fifth investigation into the 1987 killing of private detective Mr Morgan collapsed in March this year after a crown court judge threw out the evidence of “supergrass” Gary Eaton.

Mr Justice Maddison’s report ruled that Mr Eaton – a “pathological liar” with 51 criminal convictions including conspiracy to murder, bribery of police, supplying drugs, blackmail and possession of firearms – was repeatedly coached by Detective Chief Inspector Dave Cook over a 16-month period.

Mr Morgan’s brother, Alastair, who lives in Clerkenwell, told the Tribune that the case had been “destroyed by years of corruption and failure” and that “no judge in the world would entertain the case coming to court again” following the latest revelations.

He added: “I don’t harbour any hopes of justice for my brother, but I am utterly determined there will be a judicial inquiry. I won’t stop until there is one.”
