A  Beleagured Warwickshire jail is gradually being turned around, according to an independent report. Rye Hill Prison, near Rugby, has been plagued with problems since it opened in 2001. Inspections have consistently found serious failures at the institution, which has already seen three deaths.

In Rye Hill’s first inspection report, published in August 2003, positive comments were plentiful. But cracks started to appear by the second inspectors’ report in June 2005, just weeks after inmate Michael Bailey had been found hanging in his cell. The inquest decided that the 23-year-old’s suicide was avoidable.

Another inmate Wayne Reid was murdered while auditors were actually carrying out the inspection in April 2005. Three fellow inmates were later jailed in connection with the killing.
