Scotland Yard have signed up to Twitter ahead of protests planned for next week. The Metropolitan police have signed up to the micro-blogging site as police tactics are altered following criticism of how they handled G20 protestors in April.
The move has been seen as a ‘more friendly approach’ to policing, which came under fire following the death of Ian Tomlinson during the G20, as well as numerous other reports of violence.
The Met is hoping to improve communications between protestors and police, and aim to use the Twitter account to show what they are doing.
Next week Climate Camp protests are planned in central London for a week-long event. Police have met with protestors for the first time ahead of the protests.
Senior officers have told representatives from Climate Camp, they will be met with a “community-style” policing operation, with limited use of surveillance units and stop-and-searches wherever possible.
