Bart prepares for police review: BART is preparing to review its transit police department culture, hiring, training and policies in the wake of the fatal shooting of a passenger by a transit police officer.
A four-page proposal for the review was presented to the BART Board on Thursday.
The district is moving to hire a contractor in a few weeks, and the job is expected to take about four months, BART General Manager Dorothy Dugger said. The consultant also will look at options for a civilian police review board.
Officer Johannes Mehserle quit BART and was charged with murder for the New Year’s Day shooting of Oscar Grant III at the Fruitvale station.
The broad review of the police department is separate from a law firm’s review of police officers’ actions leading up to Grant’s death.
