The Gujarat State Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Surat Police Commissioner following reports that three minor boys, who were arrested for theft, were tortured in custody.
The three were reportedly picked up on Tuesday by the police in Surat’s Salabatpura area on charges of stealing Rs 28,000. The youngest of them is 10 years old. When they refused to admit to the crime, they were allegedly beaten up and even given electric shocks. They were later moved to a remand home and were granted bail on Thursday.
“They beat us and asked us to confess that we were thieves. When we refused, they gave us electric shocks,” says one of the boys, Dinesh Girase. Sagar, the brother of one of the accused, confirms this. “I am going to get my brother examined. Police shouldn’t have beaten them up like this,” he said.
However, DCP, Surat, V Chandrashekhar says no complaint has been lodged so far. “We have received no intimation of such an incident. However, we are conducting inquiring,” he said.
